One of my fond candy memories, from my youth, was when my Mom and Dad would take my brothers & I, to St. Laurent Bros Nut House in Bay City MI. I remember walking in (after passing by the big creepy/happy clown helium tank by the front door on water street) and getting that great whiff of freshly made chocolate. As people waited in line to purchase bags of nuts and other confectionary goodies, I always b-lined right passed them and went right to the fun stuff; Star Wars Cards & The Wacky Package Stickers. I remember seeing all those cool things like Wacky Wafers, Garbage Cans, Marathon Bars ,Razzles and Cosmic Candy. The last time I stopped in there, it seemed like they only carried candy that they made there fresh(and there is nothing wrong with that) and all the cool novelty candy of the 1970's had faded away.

When I was little, all of my allowance money was spent on candy. My sister
and I would ride to the party store off Van Dyke and buy Crunch,
Reese's and 3 Musketeers. Once in a while I would
buy the giant plastic Pixy Stix that was 3 feet long. My
favorite was the blue one. I always hated how the sugar got chunky at the
top and it was hard to pour into your mouth. So I would cut the tube. My
sister always bought Reese's, but I thought the little cups weren't big
enough because they were gone in 2 bites.

Squeeze Pop was by far my favorite candy. It's almost
literally liquid sugar! I would always make it a point to rush to the mall
to grab a bottle of Cherry Squeeze Pop from a certain toy store, that joyous
clear bottle of what looks to be toothpaste, but it seems that the candy
has retired! Too many cavities, or too much goodness to handle? I say the
latter, my friend.

"Charleston Chews" have always been my favorite candy,
(especially the "Strawberry" flavor). They taste like cake when you eat
them right out of the wrapper, but FREEZE them, and they're even better.
Plus they're bigger than most candy bars, so they last longer too, Ha-Ha!!!
They still remind me of going up to the candy store over on 7 Mile Road
in Detroit back in the 1970's with my brother; we'd always pick up some
"Charleston Chews" and bring them back to my grandma's house and put them
right in the freezer for later on in the evening. Good Stuff!!!

Since our first journeys around the neighborhood on Halloween night, we have all developed our own preferences when it came to the delicacy that is the candy world. I'm sure some of you who will write your own testimonial will name one specific candy that has touched your life. But what I have found in my life, is that sometimes, I'm not always in the mood for chocolate and will seek something from the fruity end of the candy earth. And the opposite can be true as well. Which is why my testimonial will consist of a chocolate and a non-chocolate segment. Enjoy.
For my non-chocolate selection, I chose Red Vines. It's pretty common, but for those who don't know, it's a red licorice with a hollow center that may also be used as a straw if you bite off the ends which is really fun to do. If Red Vines aren't available then I settle for Twizzlers, but Twizzlers can often taste like plastic whereas Red Vines contain a more consistent powerful red licorice flavor. Plus Red Vines are more fun to eat.
As for chocolate, I have a soft spot for mint-chocolate stuff which is why I'm in love with Frango Chocolates. They're a little expensive making occasions in which they are in my possession all the more special. Most commonly found in chocolatiers at malls, they come in boxes about the size of a tissue box but only one inch thick. Each candy is special with the smooth texture of chocolate that melts on contact with your tongue and sneaks in a sweet kiss of mint that will make anyone week in the knees. It is, in all forms, heavenly. So as I wipe up the drool off my desk, I challenge you, when you're feeling a little risky, to try these exquisite treats.
Sincerely yours,

The Ghoul's Delight assortment was perfect. Our grandchildren
enjoyed all the spooky treats inside! It was a perfect Halloween treat!

It's all about Choco-lite. It was a milk chocolate candy
bar segmented into 6 or 8 pieces. The chocolate was whipped and aerated
so when it hardened it had thousands of bubbles in it. When you chewed it
it was slightly 'crunchy' as though it had soft Rice Krispies in it. It
simply melted in your mouth. Unbelieveable confectionary heaven. I miss
this candy and is still my all time favorite chocolate bar. Bring the 70's
back!
